OCTOBER 2018

Today's main job was getting ready to drive the runabout to Michigan. I finished my home-made road atlas covering the routes I intend to take. Mike Bender kindly drove up from Tulsa to check out the car, and pronounced it worthy of attempting the trip, then I spent the rest of the day gathering up some of the stuff I need to take, and got some of it packed in the car. I hope to get started by 6:30 in the morning.

It seems I bit off more than I could chew in one day. I was going to stay with George at Lake Ozark this evening, but I made it only as far as Marshfield MO before sundown, and I'm not driving on any strange roads by magneto light. Getting away from home an hour later than I planned didn't help, and the Kansas part of the drive had a lot of low-speed roads. Of course at every stop you have to answer questions about the car, have the kids sit in it so their folks can take a picture, and sling the BS with the old timers. Getting through Joplin was slow going. It seemed there was a traffic light every block or two, and they were perfectly timed to make you stop at most of them. Springfield is a bigger town, but I think I got through it in half the time it took to run the Joplin gauntlet. In the morning I'll go on up to Lake Ozark, and then on to Illinois.

September is sunflower season.

This is for folks who subscribe to the superstition that Kansas is all flat.

I've passed by this old station in Chetopa many times, but never stopped to take a picture.
This was the day.

Today was the first time I've crossed that line in a Model T.

Rather than repeat what I've posted elsewhere, I'll give you a link to what I did today.

Posts on the MTFCA forum link above continue the daily updates.

With the big trip over, it's time to resume the regular posts here. I spent the morning and part of the afternoon finishing the Facebook and MTFCA versions of the trip journal. In the afternoon I talked to ace Model T engine man Mike Bender about what needs to be done to the 1915, filled the pickup's master cylinder, sorted some of the mail that piled up while I was gone, and did some of the unpacking. I'm already thinking about what the next trip may be.

Back to mundane chores. I did some mowing and there's a lot left to do. I did laundry, and split some of the wood from the big dead tree by the shop. I really didn't need a fire this evening,  but I wanted to see if this wood is dry enough to burn. Happily, yes it is. That one big old tree will provide
plenty of heat, and there are two more to come down.

Uh-oh. I mowed today, and got a lot done, but then the mower died. I thought it was out of gas, so I filled the tank. But when I turned the starter key there was just an ominous CLUNK and a lot of gas leaked out of the carburetor. So the mowing tractor is down, and now the ZTR is down, and all I have that still works is a push mower. It's a good thing mowing season is almost over.

Spray day. I mixed up ten gallons of my magic potion to slay inconvenient vegetation and waged another battle in the war on Johnson grass and other weeds. Each time I spray, less survives for the next spraying. Eventually I may actually get rid of the stuff. My other project of the day was to start writing up my recent trip for publication in the Vintage Ford. My sympathies to the editor who will have to pare the saga down to a reasonable length.

The best laid plans... I was going to do some more spraying, but my cousin Wally called with a problem. His truck died. His physical condition doesn't allow him to get down on the ground to work under a vehicle then get back up, so I went over to help out. We installed a new starter, and he didn't trust his battery, almost five years old, so we replaced that too. Now the truck starts like new. I didn't get my
spraying done, but it will still be there tomorrow.
