POETIC INDEX
On April 7, 2014, Morning Edition
invited listeners to write about their favorite block, so here's my
little piece:
My favorite block is a Kansas
mile.
Here my great grandfather claimed the
family farm.
Past summers live in memory, the shade
of oaks and elms,
pioneer-planted hedges of
Osage orange lining alfalfa fields and pastures never plowed.
Lightning bugs lit the darkening
twilight shadows as the cicadas droned their buzzing song in the trees.
From a front porch swing a lucky boy
might watch a Kansas electrical storm,
the greatest show on earth.
